Press freedom is the oxygen of democracy. Infact, without it, democracy will suffer great set back. Democracy seems to be failing in Nigeria because the freedom exist more in theory than practical.
Many media houses were penalized by the government through National Broadcast Corporation (NBC) during and after Endsar protest for exercising this freedom.
Recently, Channels TV was fined five (5) million naira for inviting a leader of IPOB to tell the world the reasons they have decided to embarked on a journey with an obscure end. Not to long ago, a media house was invaded by the military in Abuja and in Lagos ( Daily Trust Newspaper ) for publishing something different from what the government want to hear.
A lot of journalists have been silently silenced for projecting the voice of the voiceless. Examples are Late Dele Giwa , Late Bayo Odu , Late Egwu and several others though this ought not to be heard among us as the giant of Africa but that is the reality on ground. No wonder the numbers of non state actors continue to increase astronomically in the land.
As we celebrate this great day today, please, let’s remember to pray to God to heal our land so that we can enjoy the freedom of the press to the fullness. And we pray for Media Practitioners in Nigeria ,Africa and World over for Peace and God’s Protection …
Happy World Press Freedom Day
Happy public holiday Sir/Ma.
God bless Nigeria
